Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place.

- Elliott Erwitt

Photography at Whitecross enables students to experience a wide range of techniques and workshops using state of the art digital equipment.

Students are shown how to use digital cameras manually in workshops to capture the world around them before they are given the opportunity to create their own personal response to live projects.  They will receive regular tutorials to discuss how they can creatively develop their own ideas using appropriate techniques and reference points.  Students will be given the skills to interpret meaning through critical analysis of key historical and contemporary photographers, using others’ ideas to inspire their own.  They are fully supported with materials and equipment to realise their ideas into imaginative final pieces.

This means:

  • Students use a digital camera’s settings confidently to record their own personal ideas.
  • Students use formal language to talk fluently about the work of others.
  • Students understand how to plan for and use professional lighting techniques to enhance their photos.
  • Students use digital editing software to develop their own ideas with imagination and creativity.
