Music is life itself.

- Louis Armstrong

Through the exploration of music, we aim to ensure that all students gain enjoyment, satisfaction and understanding of music through composing, performing, listening and appraising a wide range of musical influences including popular, classical, jazz and world music styles.

We use the musical elements to stimulate starting points for projects, which focus on both traditional and digital musical instruments and processes. Our practical based curriculum focuses on both group and individual skills and supports the growth of confident students who are resilient and able to break through challenges, demonstrating creative skills, independence, and the ability work with and lead others.

We are really proud to have worked over the past nine years with Encore Music Services in Hereford to give every Year 7 student the opportunity to learn a musical instrument during the music curriculum. This gives students the experience of having to read music, play in an ensemble and perform in front of audiences. Students throughout all year groups can also choose to learn an instrument from a wide-ranging selection, taught by our peripatetic teachers.

This means:

  • Students develop their confidence to perform in front of an audience, showcasing their talents to a wider community.
  • Students extend their knowledge of a range of current digital recording practices, to compose and edit their own ideas.
  • Students can confidently use the musical elements to enhance the practical playing of a range of musical instruments.
  • Students learn how to appraise music using the musical elements and formal language.
  • Students develop an appreciation of a range of different musical styles and cultures.
