Pupil Premium

The pupil premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.

“It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.” Source - DfE website

We are determined to ensure that our students are given every chance to realise their full potential. Pupil premium funding, along with allocations made from the schools own budget will help ensure this money is spent to maximum effect.

Pupil Premium Spending

We use research, such as the Sutton Trust Toolkit, to support us in determining the strategies that will be most effective. Our pupil premium money has been used to provide a range of additional support for our students and these interventions, along with quality first teaching have started to have a positive impact on student's attainment and self-belief. Through targeted interventions we are working hard to eliminate barriers to learning and progress. One of the schools aims is to ensure that all students make good or better progress as they move through the school.

Information for parents and guardians

In place of the current requirements regarding information about pupil premium expenditure, schools are now required to publish their 'Pupil Premium Strategy.' This should include:

In the previous academic year 2015-2016

• how the pupil premium allocation was spent

• the impact of the expenditure on eligible and other students.

The current academic year 2016-2017

• the amount of the school's allocation of pupil premium grant

• details of the main barriers to educational achievement

• how the allocation will be spent to address the barriers and why these approaches were taken

• how the school will measure the impact of the pupil premium

• the date of the next pupil premium strategy review.

How we measure the impact of Pupil Premium

Data is collected on the progress of students at four points throughout the academic year. This data is analysed by subject teachers, heads of department, heads of academies and the senior leadership team to identify the progress of whole cohorts, classes, key groups of students and individuals. Review meetings use this data to identify gaps between the performance of pupil premium and non-pupil premium students and enable the early identification of need, support and appropriate intervention.

At each milestone, the school will review the impact of actions taken and will plan for how the progress of students who are underperforming can be accelerated, and whether funding is required to support this. When selecting students for Pupil Premium target groups, we will look at all students across the school. There are some students who are not eligible for pupil premium who will benefit from these groups if their needs are similar and we believe progress can be made towards individual targets.

Annual reviews will evaluate the impact of pupil premium spend across the school and decisions upon future spending will be made upon the impact of this spend.

Pupil Premium Funding and the impact of this is a regular item on the governors’ Personal, Development, Behaviour & Welfare committees. The designated staff member for Pupil Premium is Mr A Tootell, Assistant Headteacher and the Link Governor is Mrs C Thomas.

Financial Year 2016-2017

In the financial year 2016-2017, schools will receive £935 for students in Years 7 to 11 for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years.

Schools will also receive £1,900 for each student who has left local-authority care because of one of the following: adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order.

If a student has been registered as eligible for free school meals and has also left local-authority care for any of the reasons above, they will attract the £1,900 rate.

Children who have been in local-authority care for one day or more also attract £1,900 of pupil premium funding. Funding for these students does not go to their school; it goes to the virtual school head (VSH) in the local authority that looks after the child. VSHs are responsible for managing pupil premium funding for looked-after children.

Eligibility for Free School Meals

Free School Meals can be awarded for children after Year 2 if you or your partner is in receipt of one of the following qualifying benefits:

• Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance

• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

• Pension Guarantee Credit

• Child Tax Credit, where Working Tax Credit is NOT in payment AND your annual income does not exceed £16,190 (as determined by HM Revenues and Customs)

• Working Tax Credit 'Run On' (A four week payment when your employment has ceased or your working hours reduce below 16 per week)

• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Free school meals will only be awarded on receipt of a completed, approved application form and will commence from that date. Applications cannot be backdated. You only need to complete one application form for all your children, even if they attend different schools within Herefordshire Council's jurisdiction. Applications can only be made for children attending a school within the Herefordshire local authority. If your child/children attends a school in a different authority, your application for Free School Meals should be made to that authority, even if you reside within Herefordshire.

Pupil Premium is an important payment for schools and a really good opportunity for eligible parents and guardians to get even more support for their children in schools. If you think your child may possibly be eligible for free school meals, even if you do not want your child to eat school meals, please call into the office to collect a claim form. Every child who is eligible generates valuable income for the school.
